West Berkeley Family Practice has been situated in a landmarked
historical building with a small added clinical space since the
1980s. Over time this community clinic has outgrown the building
and clinical areas have become outmoded; modernization and added
space are essential to maintain the program. Because the existing
historical building is centrally located and welcoming with generous
and well detailed spaces rarely it was decided to renovate the building
and add a new 12,000 square foot clinic; JSWD was asked to serve
as design architect for the project.
Our goal was to visually distinguish the addition from the original
building, complementing but not compromising the historic design.
Given the very small site we decided to locate a three story structure
where the single level clinic now stands; this positions the tall
form behind and apart from the existing steeply sloped roof. A lower
two story wing replaces a storage container along one side of the
entry court, helping to define a welcoming space. Each floor of
the new structure will now house a clinical service group; reception
and waiting areas will be located in the refurbished historic building
along with administrative functions and community spaces.
            Phase I in design development.
