Lorenzo Creek Apartments provides 28 affordable
housing units for people with physical disabilities or HIV-AIDS
in Castro Valley. The design was developed with input from intensive
workshops with members of the disabled community and will provide
offices for support services, rooms for community activities, a
child's play area, and a large outdoor terrace for community gatherings.
The units are designed with outdoor circulation admit maximum daylight
and with large bathrooms to facilitate wheelchair access. A variety
of unit sizes from one-bedroom, one bath to three-bedroom, two bath
insures that the project will serve families of all sizes.
The building is designed to take advantage of
a long, narrow sloping site by using an ingenious split-level design
to maximize the building envelope. This also allows covered parking
to be provided beneath the outdoor terrace.
